Threads That We Would Like to Stay Dead

Due to the large number of people who come and go on the group, the same threads tend to appear over and over again. To save our sanity, we would *really* appreciate it if you'd refrain from bringing up any of these already beaten to death topics. If you really want to read these threads, then go to Dejanews:
* Who's your favourite Spice Girl?
* Geri and/or Emma is/is not fat
* Spice Girls vs. All Saints
* Melanie C. is a man.
* Do you desireth though to know a Spice Girl in the Biblical sense? (I mean, really, who doesn't? Like that needs to be asked)
* Any kind of religious debates
* If you don't like Mel B., you're racist (that's usually not the case, it's a sick broad generalisation. Besides, you wouldn't say someone's a Nazi sympathiser just because they don't like Victoria.)
* Why Geri left and/or her current and future plans. Please note our reasons for this and alternatives in the What's a Geri fan to do? section.
* Anything that has to do with any of the Girl's sexual preference

If you don't like the Spice Girls, then why are you here?

It must be pointed out that this is alt.*music*.spice-girls, which means it is not created with either spice fans, or haters in mind, it's for discussing the girls in general. If you're looking for a newsgroup of devoted followers where bashing of the girls is discouraged, try alt.fan.spice-girls. If you are looking for a Spice hater's group, go to alt.flame.spice-girls.

Also, if you are a fan of an individual Spice Girl, check out these newsgroups: alt.fan.melanie-chisholm, alt.fan.melanie-brown, alt.fan.emma-bunton, alt.fan.victoria-adams, and alt.fan.geri-halliwell. News server doesn't carry them? E-mail your newsadmin and ask!

Can I ask for pictures of the Spice Girls?

This is advised against. While no one will try to stop you, it is rare for anyone to waste their time e-mailing pictures over the Internet without good reason; you would be better off checking out websites (either via search engine or following hyperlinks advertised on the newsgroup). Another suggestion is to check out the newsgroup alt.binaries.spice-girls. Your newserver might not carry it, but if you ask nicely they might.

What happened to the no cursing rule?

We thought it was fucking shit, so we fucking removed it.

Do any of the Spice Girls read alt.music.spice-girls?

To the best of everyone's knowledge, no. There is no evidence to suggest that they do. However while Geri is known for going onto the Internet (mainly for "chats") so nothing can be verified.

Yeah, but I remember a lot of messages being signed by Spice Girls a while back!

At the time, we were just having a little bit of fun. The impersonations were fun back then, but now are boring. So, we won't be getting back into them any time soon.

Is Lulu really Geri?

Due to the fact that Lulu has all the latest Spice news before anyone, and a few similiarities between the two exist, some people thought that Lulu might actually be Geri. But the truth is no. She is *not* Geri.

What about Cherrysoda?

You gotta be kidding me...

I can't stand that mayonessa chick (or any other "annoying" person in the newsgroup). She thinks she's so cool and funny, but I personally think she's a jerkass. I want him/her to leave the newsgroup!!

Well, you're not the only one! Unfortunately, those people you find annoying are probably not going to leave (at least not during the latter part of this century), so your best bet is to stick them in your killfile. (Especially if you let them know they annoy you, they'll probably work harder to annoy you more.) What is a killfile/killfilter? It's a filter that's attached to your newsreader that will automatically take out posts by your (least) favourite posters so you won't have to deal with their idiocy. If you don't know how to use this feature on your newsreader, please read the newsreader's help file. If you don't have a killfile, just learn to ignore us or tolerate us. We get sick of hearing how much we suck sometimes.

What about this chat I keep reading about?

On Dalnet, channel #amsg, we hold chats. (Yes, we used to be on Undernet, but we've moved!) The official chat is monthly, but many of us go to the chat room nightly. The monthly "official chats" are on the first Saturday of every month at 12:00am GMT. Just like the newsgroup, the conversation is rarely about Spice Girls. For more information on these chats and the regs of #amsg, check out the #amsg pages.

Local Netiquette

Please where possible avoid:
- Cross posts to unrelated groups (alt.fan.spice-girls is usually acceptible though)
- Posting Binaries of any form
- Spam and/or porn postings are not appreciated.
- Leaving posts unsnipped. It's annoying to have to wade through 50k of quoted text just to get to a one line reply. So please, for sanity's sake, snip out the irrelevant parts of posts you're responding to!
- Not quoting. Yes, it's one thing to not snip posts, but it's just as annoying to reply to something and not leave in what or who you were responding to. Not only that, but it's annoying, and we would appreciate it.
- Posting in html. Usenet is primarily a text based environment, outside of the binary groups. We don't care if it looks cool... People have to download that crap!

Delurking is not a requirement in this newsgroup, however please feel free to introduce yourself if you are new to the group and wish to post.

What?! Geri left?!

Yes, good observation! Geri Halliwell, formerly known as Ginger Spice, officially left the group on May 31st, 1998. Her lawyer, Julian Turton, read the following statement from Geri at approximately 2:30pm GMT, to formally declare her departure:

"Sadly, I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences between us. I'm sure the group will continue to be successful and I wish them all the best. I have no immediate plans. I wish to apologize to all the fans and to thank them and everyone who's been there. Lots of love, Geri. PS: I'll be back."

Why would Geri do such a thing?

In a recent interview with the BBC, Geri confirmed that her reason for leaving the Spice Girls was because of her priorities. She felt she had higher priorities than being a Spice, like speaking out on breast cancer awareness and other such issues. As she told the BBC:

"...the schedule wouldn't permit me to do a breast cancer interview and I thought: 'Hold on a minute, what are your principles?'... So I had to question myself. That is the reason I left on that day - there was never a good day to leave."

Where Geri fans can go to get their fix

Since Geri isn't really on topic to alt.music.spice-girls anymore, our very own Lulu has set up alternatives where people can go to talk about current happenings with their favourite ex-Spice Girl. First, she set up the brand spankin' new newsgroup alt.fan.geri-halliwell, which can either be accessed through your news server (if they don't carry it yet, send an email to news@yourdomain.com asking nicely - they might just add it for you!) or Dejanews. She's also been wonderful enough to set up the Geri Halliwell mailing list if you want to use that as an alternative, or in addition to, the alt.fan.geri-halliwell group. We would appreciate it if you'd go there for Geri things instead of amsg, and so would Lulu! :)

What are Geri's current plans?

Since Geri left the Spice Girls, she has not completely disappeared from the public eye. If you haven't already heard, Geri's biggest crusade was joining with the UN to promote birth control in 3rd world countries. A 3 album contract with Chrysialis Records was also signed, and her first solo album is scheduled for release in June '99. Her first single, "Look at Me", was released May 17, 1999, and is currently doing well on the charts. Besides this, she's done plenty of interviews, as well as other small appearances on television and in magazines.

What's going to happen to the girls since Geri left?

For now, the remaining four have stuck together, as promised in a statement to their fans:

"We are upset and saddened by Geri's departure, but we are very supportive in whatever she wants to do. The Spice Girls are here to stay. See you at the stadiums... Friendship never ends."

There are rumours of a new album that have not been confirmed, as well as rumours of the girls going solo and whatnot. The future of the group is still pretty uncertain, but for now, their Girl Power is still alive and kicking.

Geri's parts (lyrically speaking)

Since Geri abandoned ship, there were a lot of speculation on who would sing her parts and whether or not she'd be included/acknowledged at all in any concerts or other appearances. Instead of hiring a replacement girl, the other girls are singing Geri's lines, with the exception of the Spanish rap bit in "If U Can't Dance" - they used a tape of Geri rapping while the other girls danced to it. It's safe to say they will continue to do this as long as they keep singing the older songs live.

WOW! Didja hear that Posh and Scary had BABIES?!?!?!?

Yeah, we all heard weeks ago genius. Go die...

Melanie and Jimmy Gulzar's little girl Phoenix Chi was born on Friday, Februrary 2nd at 6.42pm UK time, weighing in at 5lbs. 5oz. Mel G's reaction? "We're over the moon! Phoenix is so sweet and gorgeous. It's strange, but it feels like she has been around for ages already. We just love her so much."

As for Victoria and David Beckham, their baby boy Brooklyn Joseph (named after Brooklyn, New York) was born at a healthy 7lbs. on March 4th, 7.48pm UK time. Beckham's response? "We have had a little boy, he is perfect. I was there for the birth, it was an amazing experience and we are both overjoyed. Victoria is fantastic."

Although not much has been heard about Phoenix Chi, Brooklyn has been featured many a time in the tabloids, especially for his hernia operation and other slight exploitations by his parents. If you dig into some news archives, we're sure you'll be able to find his favourite brand of baby food and how many times a day he goes to the bathroom in there somewhere.

Where can I go about getting all this Spice Girls stuff, and other assorted crap?

If you're looking for any of the releases listed above, or if you're looking for anything and everything else that is Spice Girls, we have a few online suggestions:

CDNow. They have tons of CDs, (including import CDs), Spice on vinyl, videos, some DVDs and LDs, and t-shirts. They are very, very reputable, and we highly recommend them!

Amazon.com. If you're looking for Spice Girl books, this is the place. Amazon.com is also a very reputable online store, and has begun to sell CDs as well. Who knows, you might find what you're looking for here instead of at CDNow!

eBay Auction Classifieds. eBay is an online auction house - anything could turn up here, from candy to posters to concert tickets to rare cds to dolls and... well, you get the picture. If you're into serious Spice collecting, you should definitely check eBay out. Check out the newsgroup - lots of Spice memorabilia that is up for auction on Ebay is announced in the newsgroup.

I paid $500 for a concert ticket, now what can I spend my money on at the concert itsself?

Here, for your viewing pleasure, is a list of the things that are supposedly on sale at the Spice concerts:

  • t-shirts
  • posters
  • rings
  • necklaces
  • program books

And yes, during the summer '98 tour, the t-shirts and posters still had Geri on them.

Where can I get "Step to me"?

It was released as a single and was exclusively available by drinking $45 worth of Pepsi, saving some nebulous form of proof of purchase, then mailing them in, this was available only in the UK. It is also included in a Japanese special edition for about US$25, however outside of Japan it is available at certain Internet CD ordering sites. Apparently, there are exceptions to this rule, but in general that is the case.

Where can I get that song in Spice World that goes "C'mon, c'mon"?

The song in question is a cover of a song called "Leader of the Gang" by Gary Glitter. It is not officially released yet, but there are bootlegged copies available on the 'net.

    What is "GIRL POWER"?

It's apparently the ideal of women's individuality and independence from men, with the view of equality, not in the workplace, but everywhere.
